As much as I love skincare, my skin was not in top shape last year. Working at Be Mused Korea, I’ve learned so much about skincare but I don’t always practice what I preach. In 2020, I finally committed to improving my skin by fixing my bad skincare choices. These are the top three bad skincare habits I kicked in 2020 that improved my skin texture.
1. Not seeing a dermatologist
The number one skincare advice you always see floating around online is to consult a dermatologist. I always avoided seeing a dermatologist because I thought it would be expensive and saw it as unnecessary. But now I know it’s a must!
I finally saw a dermatologist in 2020 and was surprised to find out that what I thought were closed comedones were actually… keloid scars!
I was completely off the mark!
I’d been wasting my time with products that supposedly treated closed comedones. I needed a completely different kind of treatment.
Don’t trust what you see online, no matter how great or believable it sounds. Always consult a professional.
New Skincare Habit: See a dermatologist especially when skin issues last for over 3-6 months.
2. Not being consistent
Being a skincare enthusiast-slash-hoarder, my dresser was covered in a mess of different toner, serum, and cream bottles. Depending on my mood, I’d use a completely different routine everyday–morning and evening–and let the skincare gods guide my hand to choose the products I was feeling in that moment. But I never really knew which products gave me the best results.
Testing or using different skincare products is normal. But I forgot to keep in mind that the best results come from consistency. Some formulations, especially retinoids, need time and continued use to see the results.
Continued use is so important to really know if you like the product and if it works for you. There’s been countless times where products grew on me and I discovered I actually liked the product–even though it didn’t have a great first impression.
New Skincare Habits: Have a consistent routine, even when testing new products. Give products time to perform.
3. Ignoring what my skin really likes
What you want to like and what your skin likes are two different things!
It’s so easy to be sucked into new skincare releases and trends thanks to Instagram and Tik Tok. You get tempted into thinking a product you haven’t tried yet just might be THE ONE. This can be unproductive for your skin and your wallet.
In 2020, I learned to stick with what my skin likes and cater to that as much as possible. For example, my skin loves fermented skincare products. Do I really need to buy that cool new snail serum RIGHT NOW when my skin is doing so well with my current fermented lotus serum? (While deep down I know snail products never gave me great results…)
New Skincare Habit: Hold off on buying popular products and cater to what your skin really needs and likes right now.
